Akena wins Johnnie Walker Uganda Open title in dramatic fashion

It all came down to one dramatic putt. Three feet. Sink it, and the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open would be up for grabs in a playoff. Miss it, and Joseph Akena would make history as the newest champ. As Joseph Cwinya-ai lined up his shot, time seemed to freeze. The tension was as thick as the gallery’s anticipation.

Cwinya-ai, the seasoned pro of the group, took his time, eyeing the line, breathing deep. But this time, Lady Luck was on a coffee break. The ball skirted past the hole, marking one of the costliest bogeys in his career. The crowd erupted. Akena, the younger fan favorite, was just inches away from glory. And he didn’t disappoint. With nerves of steel, Akena sank his putt, sealing his victory and cementing his name in the Uganda Open’s storied history.

The scene on the 18th green? Absolute pandemonium! Leading the celebration charge was none other than immediate former Uganda Open champion Godfrey Nsubuga, who hoisted Akena into the air as cheers filled Entebbe Club.

Akena, the soft-spoken sensation from Lugazi Hills Country Golf Club, formerly Mehta, was the epitome of humble pie when he spoke after his unforgettable win. “I came into the Uganda Open hoping to finish among the top three, so this victory is something that I will hold on to, so dearly, for a very long time,” he said with a smile, clutching his well-deserved trophy.

His reward? A cool Shs3.8m. The top 10 amateurs will share Shs15m, courtesy of ABSA Bank.

But let’s not forget Cwinya-ai, who gave us a final round that was as thrilling as it was heart-stopping. From a jaw-dropping par save on the par-4 hole 14, to a clutch birdie on the 15th, and another on the 16th, he kept us on the edge of our seats. Then came the heartbreak on the infamous Deo Akope 17th, but hey, that’s golf for you.

And the celebrations? Oh, they didn’t just end on the greens! Akena and Cwinya-ai were the stars of the show at the all-white 19th hole extravaganza, where Johnnie Walker made sure everyone had a reason to raise their glass.

With whisky flowing, cocktails crafted to perfection, and a dinner that was nothing short of gourmet, the night was a fitting tribute to the champions.

“At Johnnie Walker, we believe in celebrating those who Keep Walking, who push boundaries and strive for greatness. This Amateur Open has been a testament to that spirit,” said Robert Nsibirwa, UBL’s Marketing Manager in charge of Spirits, during the prize-giving ceremony.

He applauded the golfers for their grit, determination, and of course, their ability to Keep Walking, just like Johnnie Walker.

“I want to congratulate all the players who have participated in this week’s edition of the tournament. Whether you’re walking away with a trophy or not, each of you has made this year’s Open truly unforgettable. Your commitment, sportsmanship, and relentless pursuit of excellence are what keep the spirit of golf alive,” he added.

Co-sponsors MTN spiced up the celebrations with a special offer to golfers and guests; all UBL beverages, including shots of Johnnie Walker, were going for Shs 1,000 as long as someone paid using Momo Pay! This irresistible offer had everyone indulging in their preferred drinks throughout the event.

Myko Ouma and his band delivered a spectacular performance that took guests on a journey of musical bliss. And when Joseph Sax hit the stage with his saxophone magic, the night truly came alive.

Now, all eyes turn to next week’s Professional Open. The 83rd Johnnie Walker Uganda Open is also supported by Hisense, MTN, NBS, Pinnacle Security Limited, Pepsi & Aquafina, NCS, ABSA Bank, HH Solution, Orchard Interiors, and Medisell.
